AI vs. the Wound Specialist: Why the Future Is Both

The useful role for AI in wound care is defined by the decision it supports. A wound specialist has to connect the patient’s story, the available findings, and the possible next steps. Software can assist with a narrower task inside that process.

01 · Different responsibilities

Start with the clinical question.

A measurement tool addresses a different question from a consultation. A draft note addresses a different question from selecting treatment. Being explicit about that difference prevents a software feature from acquiring authority it was never designed to have. The FDA describes digital health as a broad field that includes several kinds of technology; the label alone does not establish a tool’s clinical role. FDA: what is digital health?. Patients can ask what technology is involved and who checks its contribution to their care.

02 · Make uncertainty visible

A confident output can still need review.

A useful system should let the clinician inspect the underlying information and correct errors. Unclear photographs, incomplete records, and conflicting observations should remain visible rather than disappear inside a polished summary. The specialist can then explain which findings are reliable and what information is still needed. An automated result should not become the only reason to reassure a patient, alter a treatment plan, or defer an examination.

03 · The CWS principle

AI supports the decision. The wound specialist makes it.

Dr. Jonathan Johnson’s direction for CWS is a more connected, physician-led wound-care pathway. AI-enabled technologies may support measurement, monitoring, and documentation as the approach develops. Clinical judgment remains responsible for whether a wound can continue with conservative care, needs further evaluation, or warrants surgical consideration when appropriate. This page describes that direction without claiming a deployed CWS AI diagnostic system. The standard for any future tool is whether it helps the team make and communicate an informed decision about the individual patient.
