What Is AI-Enabled Wound Care?
AI-enabled wound care describes the use of artificial intelligence to support parts of a clinical workflow. Telemedicine connects people; digital records organize information; AI may help analyze some of that information. They are related tools, with different jobs.
Virtual care is the connection.
A virtual wound consultation is an encounter with a clinician using telemedicine. It can include discussion of a wound history, a review of available photographs, and planning the next evaluation. AI-assisted wound assessment refers to a software function, such as an algorithm that proposes a wound boundary on an image. A virtual visit does not automatically include AI, and a digital photograph is not itself an AI assessment. The FDA distinguishes telehealth, health information technology, and software functions within the wider digital health field. FDA: what is digital health?.
A tool needs a defined task.
The useful question is what a particular tool has been designed and evaluated to do. Measurement support, organizing serial images, and drafting documentation are different tasks. Each needs its own checks. An AI-generated measurement should remain connected to the original photograph, the method used, and the clinician who reviewed it. A polished summary should not turn uncertain observations into a diagnosis. For patients, it is reasonable to ask which parts of a visit involve software and who is responsible for checking the result.
Physician judgment stays central.
Dr. Jonathan Johnson and Comprehensive Wound Services are building a more connected approach to complex wound care. The direction is virtual-first, AI-enabled, and physician-led. This is a description of the approach being developed, not an announcement of an available automated wound-analysis service. The wound specialist remains responsible for deciding what can be understood remotely and what needs examination, diagnostic evaluation, or surgical consideration when appropriate. AI supports the decision. The wound specialist makes it.
