Can a Wound Be Evaluated Through Telemedicine?
A wound consultation can begin through telemedicine when the clinician considers a virtual visit appropriate. The goal is to understand the problem and agree on the next step. Whether the evaluation can be completed remotely depends on the wound, the available information, and the patient’s needs.
Bring the wound’s history.
Useful information includes when the wound began, where it is located, previous treatments, recent changes, and the other clinicians involved. Have a medication list and relevant records available if the team requests them. Explain difficulties with travel, positioning, hearing, or using the device before the appointment. HHS advises checking that the patient and clinician can see and hear one another and documenting limitations of the virtual examination. HHS: conducting a telehealth physical exam.
An image starts a conversation.
The specialist may review supplied images alongside the patient’s account and any available bedside observations. A still image and a live conversation answer different questions. The clinician may ask for more history or a different view, or explain that a particular finding cannot be confirmed remotely. Patients should not remove a dressing, manipulate a wound, or attempt a measurement simply to improve a photograph unless their care team has given instructions. Ask the team how to share images through its approved process.
Leave with a next step.
Before the consultation ends, ask what was established, what remains uncertain, and who will arrange follow-up. A plan may continue with virtual review, request records or testing, or move to an in-person wound evaluation. Virtual access does not promise that every part of treatment can happen at home. At CWS, the purpose is to connect the patient with wound-specialist judgment and an appropriate care pathway. A routine consultation request is not an emergency service.
